Background:

Viv Retin was born on the Zakdorn homeworld in 2344 to a diplomat mother and a soldier father. Due to his mother's continuous travelling it was deemed easier to move to Earth, and his father left the Zakdorn military to look after Viv whilst his mother was out on diplomatic negotiations.

His father always thought that Viv would follow in his mother's foot-prints and become a diplomat like her, so he was pleased when Retin decided to join Starfleet instead.

Due to the Zakdorn's natural capabilities as tacticians, Retin did well, graduating quite high in his class. His conduct, however, could have been improved. He had a reputation for defying superior officers when it suited him, and that landed him the less-than-desirable posting on board the USS Theseus, an Excelsior-class starship, as a Security/Tactical officer

Retin realised that his career wasn't going to go anywhere if he continued the way he had over the past few years, and he worked hard, eventually winning a promotion to Lieutenant j.g. and a position of Asst. Chief of Security/Tactical on the Theseus.

One year later there was a reprimand on his record for defiance of a superior officer. That's the official reason, anyway.

Despite this, Viv got himself promoted to full Lieutenant next year and finally got off the hellhole that was the Theseus. This time he was assigned to the Galaxy-class starship Shadowdancer, as Asst. Chief of Tactical. He worked better on that ship, and before long he won a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and a position as Chief of Security/Tactical. He stayed in that role for a year or so, until he was made a Commander and transferred to the USS Emancipator as her XO.

Two years later he found himself losing a pip. He was court-martialled for

and demoted to Lieutenant Commander. Although he remained as her Executive officer, it was a blow to his career and took saving the life of his Captain and a platoon of Marines in the battle of Delonnois III for him to get his rank back. This time around, he got himself the Starfleet Medal of Service for his bravery. This time around, he had to be assigned to the USS Thunderhammer as her XO, and served with her for three years until Admiral Marix requested him to be promoted and assigned to the USS Paladin. It wasn't as if Marix liked him - the two of them hate each other's guts, and have been rivals ever since they served on the Theseus - but the Paladin was a less than lucrative posting, and Marix believed that in the long run Retin would wind up worse off there than on the Thunderhammer. This has yet to be proven.

Personality:

Viv Retin, or 'Slick' as his friends call him, has one quirk that is noticed straight away: his contempt for superior officers. This has cost him quite dearly in his career, but he refuses to change his ways. There have been only two higher-ranking officers who he has respected - Captain Tourin, of the USS Thunderhammer and Lieutenant Commander Diel Jaunto, Chief Tactical officer of the USS Shadowdancer. He will tolerate others, but they have to have done something quite impressive to earn his respect, a great accomplishment in itself.

Slick doesn't give a damn about the fact that his attitude is one that - if it were shared by others in the fleet - could collapse the whole chain of command in Starfleet. There are few things Retin cares about, in fact, but one of them is his ship, and his crew. He hates losing people, and blames himself if there are casualties in a battle or otherwise.

Viv is quite a happy-go-lucky character, always ready to help out his friends, and prefers it if his senior staff disregard rank with him. He is friendly with those under him, but does have quite a temper and his subordinate officers tend to be wary in his presence, going along with his friendliness, but being as careful as possible when dealing with him.

He has quite a good relationship with his parents, and contacts them from time to time. His mother could have been more pleased at his decision to join Starfleet, but when she saw how far he has gone, she relented.

As an ex-security officer, Slick has a natural suspicion when dealing with new people, and it is best to be cautious around him if he's suspicious of you. He learnt Kung Fu at the Academy, and continued to practise it all through his career. He has found it quite helpful in the past when dealing with 'un-cooperating' prisoners. He is a cunning tactician, and many an enemy has learnt that the hard way when dealing with him in a battle.

An old friend from the Thunderhammer, Captain Vakin McKenzy, introduced him to racing holodeck simulations, and Retin has grown a, shall we say, fondness for those ever since. Tongo and Dabo are also some of his favourite past-times, and he plays the drums whenever he can.

He also enjoys holodeck role-plays, his favourites being those which test his powers of investigation and deduction. This would normally make Sherlock Holmes a favourite, but he cannot abide the 'self-assured, arrogant sod who always thinks he's right'. Instead he plays role-plays of Matt Scudder novels, and enjoys them thoroughly. He will often try to drag a friend out there to join him.

His biggest peeve is incompetent officers who follow what their leader's orders unquestioningly, no matter the circumstances.

Special:

Retin has an uncanny ability to blend into a crowd, and can disappear anywhere he wants to when it suits him. He was once approached by Intelligence for a place within their ranks, but turned down the offer.
