Army Ranks

The lowest rank in the Army is Private, or Trooper in the Cavalry.

The rank of Semissalis is the lowest 'Officer' rank, and is generally Commander of ten.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists.  The Semissalis is appointed as Biarchus, the deputy of the Centenarius.

The rank of Centenarius is commander of a 'Century', or a Cavalry Turma.  This is approximately 80 Infantry or 30 Cavalry.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists.  One Centenarius per Regiment is known as Primicerius, which is a separate post above and beyond the command positions.  He is senior to other Centenarii, and acts as Adjutant to the commander of the Regiment.

The rank of  Ducenarius is commander of an Ordo [Battalion].  There are three to six Ordines in a Regiment.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists.

The rank of Praefectus is commander of a Vexillatio [Regiment].  They also control fortresses and the like.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists, except that senior Ducenarii are promoted to Praefectus without a separate force to command, and are known as Senators.  There is one Senator per Regiment, and he is the second in Command.

The rank of Tribunus is commander of a Legion, or a group of Regiments [a Brigade].  The rank can be given to a Praefectus as an honour.

The rank of Dux is Commander of a group of such forces.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists.

The Rank of Vice-Comes is used to denote the sub-ordinate of a Comes, including the Master of Horse of the Comes Britanniae.  It is only possible to get this rank if a vacancy exists.

The highest rank is Comes, and is used for commanders of Field Armies.  These are sometimes referred to as Counts.  To be a Comes you first need to be promoted to Vice-Comes, and then  given a position that requires a Comes to command.  The next promotion is to Comes, and this rank is retained even if the position is lost.
