Comes Britanniae

The army of the Comes is the most professional, well paid and well trained army in Britain, and consists of the Comes, and the Master of Horse, and three Tribunes, each with a bodyguard of 30 cavalry, equipped to fight or take messages [just like the Comes and Master of Horse].  One of the Tribunes commands Cavalry forces, the others Legions.

The Comes has a seat on the Supreme Collegium.

The following units are commanded by the Comes.

Equites Catafractarii  'Knights, Fully Armoured'.

These are three Ordines [each Ordo of about 100 men] fully armoured men on fully armoured horses. Equipped with a Lance, and Sword or Mace, these ponderously slow Cavalrymen rely on the shock of the Impact of this weight of cavalry to smash through enemy forces.

Equites Honoriani Seniores 'Knights of the Honored First'

These are also three Ordines, of partially armoured men, on unarmoured horses, with Javelins, Sword and Shield.  Rely on the speed of movement, terror of Cavalry in general, and the effect of concentrated fire to break an enemy formation, which is then exploited.  Well able to fight other cavalry.

Equites Stablesiani 'Knights of the Stable'

As E.H.S above.

Equites Honoriani Taifali Iuniores 'Knights of the Honoured Taifali Juniors'

As E.H.S above.

Equites Scutarii Aureliaci 'Knights of the Large Shields raised under Emperor Aurelius'

Unarmoured men on unarmoured horses, protected by a large shield, and using Sword and Shield.  Also of three Ordines, as above.  These are scouts and pursuit cavalry, faster and more agile than the above, but using the same tactics against enemy foot.  Less likely to fight other cavalry, or even to charge home against Infantry.  Good at sweeping away enemy scouts.

Equites Syria 'Knights of Syria'

Three Ordines of Horse Archers.  As lightly armoured as the above scouts, with a small shield, bow and arrows, with a sword they do not like to have to use.  Ride about shooting....

Legio Primani Iuniores 'Legion First Juniors'

Six Ordines of 200 men each.  Four are mixed, and two are 'Lanciarii'.  The mixed have men with leather armour, shields, Javelins and Swords, and some Bows and Arrows instead of Javelins, forming the final ranks.  The Lanciarii are all equipped as unarmoured men with Javelin, shield and sword.  Commanded by a Tribunus [See above].

Legio Secundani Iuniores 'Legion Second Juniors'

Identical to Primani.

Auxilium Victores Iuniores Britanniciani 'Auxiliaries, The Victorious Juniors of Britain'

Elite troops, three Ordines of 200 men each.  Equipped as heaviest of Legions, but more agile and capable of fighting in bad terrain.

Total Strength : 2,000 Cavalry, 3,000 Infantry.

Note that Equites means Knights in the sense of a man of privilege and rank, BUT was used as a designation of Cavalry units after the meaning became redundant.

Iuniores/Seniores was used in the sense of level of Rank.  In MUCH later days they would be 1st Battalion for Seniores, and 2nd Battalion for Iuniores.
